Description
The Market Hall, located in the Market Place, was built in 1859 by Mr. Strapp. This single-storey building features a front made of ashlar stone, set on a projecting plinth. It has three bays, each with a large arched opening framed by rusticated pilasters and coupled brackets that support a moulded cornice. The central bay slightly projects and is topped with a pediment that includes a roundel in the tympanum. Each arch has a string at the spring and a voussoir head, and the arches are glazed with a concentric and radiating pattern. The hall is also adorned with large cast iron gates made of round bars and acanthus scroll framing, crafted by Hill and Smith of Brierly Hill. The Market Hall, along with Nos 25 to 32, forms a cohesive group.
