Description

No 27, located in the Cheese Market, is a Grade II listed building dating from 1594. The west front, which faces St. Thomas's Square, features a late 18th-century design. It is three storeys high, with an ashlar stone ground floor and a brick upper part. The building has a projecting plinth and a flat eaves cornice supported by coupled brackets.

On the upper floors, there are two windows and a panel on the left side, all with stone cills and key blocks. The ground floor has an early 19th-century shop front on the left, divided into three bays by panelled pilasters that have flat scroll brackets. There is a plain frieze and a delicate moulded cornice that breaks forward over the pilasters. To the right of centre, there is a modern door with panelled reveals and a reeded surround, featuring a doorcase made of reeded pilasters, a reeded necking, a small broken cornice, and an open pediment. The tympanum is decorated with wreath and swag ornamentation.

The north front has one window, while the south front has two windows on the upper floors and a similar shop window on the ground floor. Inside, there is a good staircase with an open string and turned balusters. The first-floor rooms, originally one, feature a panelled dado and a well-carved cornice.

Nos 25 to 32, along with the Market Hall, form a group with this building.
