Description
Nos 31 and 31A, located in the Market Place, are a Grade II* listed building with origins likely dating back to the 14th century. The property was once owned by the Eyre family and underwent a refronting in the late 18th century. It features three storeys of colourwashed brick, accented by a brick and stone cornice, with bricks projecting in pairs to form brackets. The building has a stucco parapet topped with stone coping and an old tiled roof.
The upper floors have two windows with recessed sashes that do not have glazing bars. The ground floor has a modern shop front that has replaced an early 19th-century shop, along with a house door that has four panels and an altered rectangular fanlight. To the left, there is a yard entry that leads to No 29, featuring plain wrought iron gates and dog rails. Inside the passage to the yard, the party wall with Nos 28-28A has wall posts and arched bracing.
At the back of the house, there is a timber frame with brick infilling set on a stone base, featuring tile-hung gables and a large chimney stack. The windows are irregular, comprising both casements and sashes. Part of the original roof structure, including a collar and purlin, is still visible. Nos 25 to 32, along with the Market Hall, form a cohesive group in the area.
