Description
The Midland Bank, located at 25 Market Place, is a late 18th-century building situated on a corner site with Minster Street. It is three storeys tall and constructed of red brick, featuring a moulded stone cornice. The ground floor has been sympathetically altered for bank use, showcasing a rusticated stone skin with Doric pilasters and an entablature across the front. The windows are set in recesses with flanking columns in antis.
On the upper floors, there are four recessed sash windows with intact glazing bars facing Minster Street. The first-floor windows break through a deep stone facing above the ground floor cornice. The return front to Cheese Market has a similar ground floor treatment and consists of six bays, with two to the left featuring windows like those on Minster Street. The four bays to the right incorporate a former separate house, also of red brick, which has a bracketed cornice and parapet. The second floor has four windows, while the first floor has three windows and one blocked window, all with flush architrave framed sashes and intact glazing bars.
The entrance, contemporary with the bank's alterations, is set across the corner and recessed, supported by elaborate scroll-carved brackets. The Midland Bank is part of a group with Nos 25 to 32 and the Market Hall.
