Description

MARKET PLACE 1. 1594 (Cheese Market) No 32 SU 1430 SW 1/506 II GV 2. Formerly the Maidenhead Inn, rebuilt 1767 with C19 refacing and ground floor altered. 3 storeys, plum colour header bricks. C19 rusticated ashlar ground floor with stone frieze and shallow cornice. Chamfered stone quoins and stone band over 1st floor. Bracketed stone cornice, rendered parapet with stone coping. Symmetrical fenestration to upper floors: 4 windows, recessed-sashes, no glazing bars, gauged flat arches, stone key blocks. 3 windows to ground floor, no glazing bars. Entrance to left in rectangular recess, C19 4-panel door with rectangular fanlight. Interior has good staircase open string with shaped brackets to tread ends, turned balusters, moulded swept handrail. Good C18 fireplace on 1st floor.

Nos 25 to 32 (consec) and the Market Hall form a group.
