Description

Nos 28 and 28A in Market Place are a late 18th century refronting of a 17th century building. The structure has two storeys, with a stuccoed ground floor that was originally brick, and an oversailing timber-framed first floor faced with colourwashed mathematical tiles, resting on a moulded band at the foot of the oversail. The roof is hipped and covered with slate, featuring a low pitch.

The ground floor showcases an unsymmetrical early 19th century shop front. The left-hand window has been modernised, while the right side consists of five panes, with a pilastered, panelled, and glazed door situated between them. This shop front is framed by narrow Tuscan pilasters, a frieze, and a cornice. Previously, there was a yard entry to the right in the same framework, but it has been replaced by a modern shop front in an early 19th century style.

On the front facing St Thomas's Square, there are two flush framed sash windows on the first floor. The ground floor has an altered small early 19th century double shop front with a window of 12 panes. A modern glazed door has replaced the original panelled door, and the rectangular fanlight above it has been blocked, with the pilaster frame and entablature removed. The shop front to the right returns around the corner.

Originally, this building was known as the Vine Inn. At the rear, there is an original staircase featuring a closed string and turned balusters. Nos 28 and 28A form a group with Nos 2 and 4 St Thomas's Square, as well as with Nos 25 to 32 (consecutive) and the Market Hall.
