Description

The British Legion, located at No 29 in the Market Place, is a building dating from around 1680, originally associated with Sir Samuel Eyre. It features two storeys, an attic, and a semi-basement, constructed of colourwashed brick with projecting rusticated brick quoins. The first floor has a string course and a deep moulded and coved eaves cornice, topped by a steep hipped roof covered with old tiles, which includes two dormers. The first floor has five flush framed sash windows with intact glazing bars, while the ground floor has two tripartite sash windows and a central door that has been altered and blocked by a modern brick extension. Originally, there was a flat hood supported by richly carved acanthus scroll brackets above the door. The basement windows have been blocked or altered, and there is an oak mullioned window in the north wall at half landing level. Inside, the building features a good staircase with a closed string, turned balusters, and square newels. The northwest room on the first floor has moulded panelling and a fireplace, while the semi-basement contains reused heavy 15th-century moulded beams. The British Legion is part of a group that includes Nos 25 to 32 and the Market Hall.
