Description

Probably dating to around 1830, 18 and 19 Berriew Street are a pair of shops with living accommodation. They are built of painted brick with a slate roof and end wall stacks. The buildings were designed symmetrically, featuring a central, round-arched passage entry. Originally, each shop front contained three slender, fluted columns supporting a moulded cornice, framing the inner doorway and window, separated by a slim mullion – likely later replacements of the original glazing. Greek key decoration appears on the frieze above the doors and windows. The upper windows are 12-pane sashes on the first floor, and 6-pane sashes on the second storey, positioned either side of the blind central windows above the passage. These openings are topped with flat, arched heads constructed of gauged brick. The buildings are listed for their group value due to their early 19th-century origins and the survival of their shop fronts, which are of exceptional quality.
