Description
28 Broad Street is a building dating from 1808, as noted by an inscribed keystone with the initials M.M. (Margaret Meredith). It was rebuilt on a site previously occupied by the Plough and Harrow Public House and is part of a larger series of early 19th-century rebuilding in this area of the town. While it may have originally been a private house, it was certainly in commercial use by the late 19th century.
The exterior is constructed of brick and topped with a slate roof. The building stands three storeys high and features a wide two-window range. The ground floor has a modern shop front that covers the entire area, but the upper storeys maintain their original character. The first floor has 16-pane sash windows with painted sills and splayed lintels that include stressed keystones, while the second floor features 8-pane sash windows with similar heads.
Despite the modern alterations to the ground floor, this modest early 19th-century building retains much of its character and is part of a group of domestic and commercial structures at the heart of the town.
