Description
22 Broad Street is a late 19th-century building featuring a rendered exterior over brick, topped with a hipped slate roof and equipped with rear axial and end wall stacks. Historical photographs from the late 19th century reveal the building originally had exposed brickwork and stone dressings, including angle quoins, which have since been transformed into stressed angle pilasters. The structure stands three storeys high with an attic and has a four-window range that is accentuated by corner and central pilasters.
The ground floor showcases a late 19th-century shop front, which includes two entrances flanked by three tall bow windows adorned with side mirror strips and vibrant decorations of birds, flowers, and other motifs. A continuous moulded fascia runs above. Each floor above features 12-pane sash windows with cambered heads, and there is a string course above the first floor, complemented by a central pilaster that panels the facade. The building is finished with a modillion eaves cornice and includes two hipped dormers, each fitted with 6-pane sash windows.
On the Church Street side, there is a four-window return range that is similarly panelled with pilaster strips. This side features a disused doorway with a moulded architrave on the ground floor, and similar windows on the upper storeys, with the corner and third windows being blind. Additionally, there are three hipped dormers in the roof.
