Description
42 High Street is a late 19th-century commercial building constructed of painted brick with painted stone dressings and a slate roof. It stands three storeys tall and features a five-window range. The ground floor was entirely renewed around 1970, but the upper storeys remain virtually unaltered. Notable architectural features include tall wood mullioned and transomed windows set in moulded architraves, with a deep panelled sill band on the first floor and segmental pediments supported by brackets over each window. The upper storey has a bracketted sill band and entablature hoods above each window, along with angle quoins. A deep eaves band with modillion brackets supports a projecting cornice.
Despite alterations to the original internal layout and ground floor elevation, this building is an interesting example of late 19th-century commercial development and is part of an important group of buildings on High Street.
