Description
7 Church Street is a 17th-century building with a stuccoed exterior over timber framing and a slate roof. It has two storeys and follows a hall and cross wing plan, with the right-hand wing occupied separately at ground floor level. The building features three parallel gables, which include 20th-century shop fronts and casement windows with three and four lights above. An earlier wooden mullioned window can be seen internally in the right-hand gable. The gables are jettied above the upper windows and are adorned with bargeboards and finials.
Inside, at least four pairs of cruck trusses are partially visible in the end walls and between the hall range and cross wings. Three of these trusses have steeply cambered collars with short king posts, and one of the central trusses features arch bracing to the collar. Originally, the building likely had a full-length open hall, but the roofline was altered, and it was remodeled with the addition of three parallel gabled ranges over the hall and cross wings. These are framed with square panelling and feature queen post and strut timbering in the gable apexes. An upper floor was probably inserted during this remodeling, with a chamfered spine beam in the hall range. A panel dated 1681 with the initials T. over I. A. on the north gable wall may indicate the time of the floor's insertion and the construction of the cross gables.
