Description
5 Town Hall is a building featuring a rendered exterior over a timber frame, with a brick rear wing and slate roofs throughout. The upper gable wall reveals square panelled framing, exposed after the demolition of an adjacent property. The building is two storeys high with a two-window range and a shallow gable above the left-hand upper window. In 1927, a shop front designed by Pollard of London was added, featuring painted bronze framework around plate glass windows. The entrance to the shop is recessed to enhance the display area, which is symmetrically designed to include a central island display unit.
At the first floor level, remnants of the original timber-framed structure are visible, including a cambered tie beam with a queen post and collar roof in the upper gable wall, as well as a central king post and strut truss that has been partially cut through. Traces of wind braces can be seen on the rear slope of the roof, and possibly on the front slope as well, although these are plastered over.
