Description
3 Church Street is a building that appears to have been constructed as a single development around 1800 to 1820. Number 2 was likely built as a house, with a small shop added in the late 19th century. Numbers 3 and 4 were built around the same time, almost certainly as a warehouse for the grocers' business at 22 Broad Street. Today, the properties house two shops and a restaurant.
The exterior is made of brick and features a slate roof. Number 2 is four storeys high with a single window range. It has a late 19th-century shop front on the ground floor and 12-pane sash windows with steep cambered heads above. The warehouse range is also four storeys tall and has a four-window range, with paired openings on either side of what was once a loading bay, now shown as a slightly recessed narrow bay with inserted windows. To the left, there is a small shop front added next to a surviving original doorway, which has a high overlight and a cambered brick head. To the right is a larger shop front that now serves as the restaurant. The original pattern of openings in the upper storeys remains mostly intact, although the windows themselves have been renewed. A deep dentilled eaves band runs across both properties.
This building is listed as part of a group of structures at the town's center and is a representative example of a warehouse built to support commercial premises. This type of building was once common in Welshpool, and this particular example is prominently located and has maintained the functional qualities of its design despite changes in use.
