Description
2 Church Street is a building that dates from around 1800 to 1820 and was likely constructed as a single development. Number 2 was probably originally built as a house, with a small shop added in the late 19th century. Numbers 3 and 4 were built around the same time, likely serving as a warehouse for the grocers' business located at 22 Broad Street. Today, the properties include two shops and a restaurant.
The exterior features brick construction topped with a slate roof. Number 2 stands four storeys high and has a single window range, with a late 19th-century shop front on the ground floor and 12-pane sash windows with steep cambered heads above. The warehouse section is also four storeys tall and has a four-window range, with paired openings flanking a former loading bay, which is now a slightly recessed narrow bay with inserted windows. To the left, there is a small shop front added next to an original doorway that features a high overlight and a cambered brick head. To the right is a larger shop front that now serves as the restaurant. The original pattern of openings in the upper storeys remains largely intact, although the windows have been replaced. A deep dentilled eaves band extends across both properties.
This building is listed as part of a group of structures at the town's center and is a representative example of a warehouse built to support commercial activities. Such buildings were once common in Welshpool, and this example is prominently situated and has maintained its functional design qualities despite changes in use.
