Description

3 and 5 Castlegate are two houses that have been converted into a shop and storage space. They date from the late 18th century to the mid-19th century, with some alterations made in the late 19th and 20th centuries. The buildings are constructed of brick, which is partly colourwashed, and feature hipped and gabled roofs made of pantiles and slate, with a catslide roof at the rear.

Number 3, on the left, has double rebated eaves, a single coped gable, and a single ridge stack. It stands three storeys tall and has a four-window range of plain sash windows with rubbed brick heads. Below, there is a full-width late 19th-century wooden shopfront with brackets supporting the cornice. The shopfront includes a recessed central glazed door with an overlight, flanked by two single-pane windows with toplights, one of which has been reglazed.

Number 5, on the right, is slightly lower and also three storeys tall, featuring a three-window range of segment-headed plain sashes, with the second-floor windows being smaller. Below, on the left, there is a 20th-century pedimented doorcase with a panelled door and overlight. To the right of the doorcase are two segment-headed plain sashes. The left side of the building, facing Kirkgate, has a plinth and a first-floor band, with two blank sections on each floor. Below, there is a garage door and to its right, two late 19th-century two-light shop windows with cornices.

The former warehouse, located to the left, is three storeys high with three windows. It features a central hoist door flanked by single segment-headed glazing bar casements, and the second-floor door has a crane above it. Below this, there is a central garage door.
