Description
No. 5 Kirkgate is a house that has been converted into a shop and restaurant. It was built around 1770 and has undergone alterations in the late 19th and late 20th centuries. The building is constructed of brick, with a rendered left side and a pantile roof featuring two gable stacks. Architectural details include an incomplete first floor band, a second floor band, cogged eaves, and coped gables.
The building has three storeys and a four-window range of segment-headed 12-pane sash windows, with a row of four flat-headed 9-pane sash windows above, one of which is blank. The late 19th-century wooden shopfront features pilasters and scroll brackets supporting a dentillated corniced fascia. The central doorway is recessed and flanked by single 2-light windows, with glazed doors and windows that all have toplights. To the right, there is an elliptical arched entry with a 20th-century six-panel door.
At the rear, there is a two-storey wing facing Bargate, which has a single coped gable and a gable stack. The rendered front of this wing includes two 12-pane sash windows and a large 20th-century door with a wooden pilastered surround and cornice.
