Description
110 and 114 London Street are a pair of houses built in the late 18th century, with alterations made in the 19th century.
The buildings are constructed of brick, featuring a white-painted stucco east elevation, timber shopfronts, and an iron balcony. The roof is covered with clay tiles. They have a single rectangular plan, standing three storeys plus a basement. The ground floor is divided by a passage that provides access to 112 London Street at the rear. Number 110 occupies the two northern bays, while number 114 occupies the three southern bays.
The east elevation showcases two timber shopfronts. The shopfront of number 114 includes an original doorcase to the north of a full-height glazed shop window, likely added in the later 20th century. Slender reeded wooden Corinthian engaged columns flank this shopfront. Number 110 features a 21st-century replacement shopfront with raised and fielded timber panelling designed to mimic historic styles. Between the two shopfronts is a covered passage that runs east-west, which has a rectangular overlight with circular ornament and a wrought iron gateway.
Both the first and second floors have five bays of timber sash windows. The first-floor windows are six-over-nine glazed, full-height windows, while the second-floor windows have three-over-six glazing. An iron fretwork balcony spans the entire width of the first floor.
The building's H-shaped roof has a wooden dentil eaves cornice and consists of three pitched roofs: two running north-south over the eastern and western halves, and an east-west gable roof connecting them at the centre. Two chimney stacks are positioned over the party wall between 114 London Street and 116-128 London Street to the south.
Inside, the ground floor and a large portion of the basement of number 114 were modified in the 21st century for use as office and storage spaces. However, an unaltered vaulted section of the cellar remains.
