Description

This is a house, likely originally designed as a pair, built in the mid-18th century. A shopfront was added in the mid-19th century, and the building was partially rebuilt and extended to the rear in the later 20th century.

The building is constructed of grey brick laid in a header bond pattern, with red-brick dressings. The ground floor is rendered and painted. The paired hipped roofs are covered with plain tiles. The rear (west) elevations, dating to the later 20th century, are of machine-cut red brick.

The original building has a roughly square floor plan, arranged over three storeys with a cellar. The rear extensions appear to have been added in a single phase, of varying heights, creating a larger, rectangular footprint.

The main, eastern elevation dates from the mid-19th century; the entrance to the south is a round-headed recessed opening with a circle and tear-drop fanlight over a replacement panelled door, approached by steps. Adjacent is a mid-19th century shopfront with a multi-paned window, flanked by shallow pilasters with corbel brackets and a lead-coped flat hood. The northern half of the east elevation has two windows at ground-floor level. Above, there are four windows on each storey, arranged in pairs, separated by a brick string course. The windows have flat arches finished with gauged brick, and exposed sash frames set flush with the frontage, now containing replacement multi-paned horned frames. A moulded brick dentil cornice runs along the frontage, above which the parapet is laid in a Flemish bond pattern with red stretchers and grey headers. The two hipped ridges are visible above the parapet. The north-east corner of the building is chamfered. The north elevation, facing Church Street, is of red brick laid in a Flemish bond pattern with grey headers, above a rendered plinth. The rear section of this elevation is lower and under the roofline, featuring a multi-pane casement window on the ground and first floors.
