Description
This is a three-storey terraced house, built in the early to mid-18th century and subsequently altered. It now operates as a shop and residential flats.
The house is constructed of tuck-pointed red brick in a Flemish bond pattern, with timber and stucco dressings and a clay tile roof. The main, east-facing elevation is three bays wide and three storeys high. The ground floor features two six-over-six sash windows with heavily moulded frames, and a recessed entrance doorway with a moulded doorcase supported by two console brackets and a cornice. The doorway has a six-panelled door fitted with brass furniture, and an elaborate, rococo-style transom light above. A timber cornice separates the ground floor from the first. The first floor has four large Doric pilasters supporting a broad stucco entablature with metopes and a dentilled cornice. Three six-over-six sash windows are set between the pilasters, with moulded frames and keystones; the outer sashes have simple geometric keystones, and the central sash has a larger console keystone. The second floor, or attic storey, has segmental-headed six-over-six sash windows with exposed sash boxes, topped by a brick parapet with a stone coping. A tile-covered mansard roof is concealed behind the parapet. All the sash windows on this elevation are flush with the brickwork. The basement, painted white, has two hopper windows behind iron railings.
The rear, west-facing elevation is three bays wide, with the ground and first floors painted white and the second floor in exposed red brick. The first floor has a large 36-pane uPVC window in the northernmost bay, and two timber eight-over-twelve sash windows in the other bays. The second floor mirrors this arrangement, with a 36-pane uPVC window and two eight-over-eight sash windows.
