Description
81 London Street is a townhouse built in the early 19th century, which has been significantly enlarged at the rear in the late 20th century.
The building is constructed of red brick with stucco dressings and features a slate roof. The original three-storey section faces west onto London Street and is connected to a three-storey rear extension that extends eastward, creating a long rectangular layout with a central lightwell.
On the exterior, the ground floor has a modern shopfront that includes a double-door entrance on the left, a large fixed-pane shop window in the center over a panelled stall riser, and a glazed door on the right for access to the shop unit. Each opening is framed by full-height pilasters that support a fascia for a shop sign.
A stucco band separates the ground floor from the upper levels, which are made of red brick laid in irregular Flemish bond. The first and second floors each feature three recessed, six-over-six glazed sash windows with flat-arch heads made of gauged brickwork. Above the second floor, there is a stucco entablature and cornice, topped by a broad, plain parapet painted white. The hipped roof of the original building connects to another hipped roof over the late-20th-century rear extension.
The rear extension also has three storeys, with the east elevation featuring a bay window at the first-floor level, topped by a jettied box window on the second floor.
It is understood that the interior has been redeveloped behind the façade.
