Description

The Old Cockpit is a 2-storey octagonal building constructed of brick and topped with a graded slate roof. It features single ring cambered heads above the doorway and windows, which are primarily located at the first floor level to illuminate the pit inside. The windows are 2-paned with small panes, and the ground floor windows are boarded. One window above the entrance, located beneath the eaves, has early leaded lights.

Inside, the lower storey has a cobbled floor, and two parallel beams supported by rough chamfered posts carry the first floor. This level includes a reconstruction of the original boarded enclosure surrounding the pit. The roof is supported by a central post and features a king-post truss that is braced to eight main rafters. A date of 1821 is scratched into the tie beam.
