Description
18 and 19 Berriew Street in Welshpool are likely from around 1830. They are constructed of painted brick with a slate roof and end wall stacks. Designed as a pair of shops with living accommodation, the buildings are symmetrically arranged with a central round-arched passage entry. Each original shop front features three slender fluted columns that support a moulded cornice, flanking an inner doorway and window, separated by a single slim mullion. The glazing in these openings is likely to have been replaced in the late 19th or early 20th century. The frieze above the doors and windows is decorated with a Greek key pattern. The upper windows consist of 12-pane sashes on the first floor and 6-pane sashes on the second floor, positioned beside blind central windows above the passage. All these openings have flat arched gauged brick heads. The buildings are listed as a pair of early 19th-century shop structures that have survived intact, showcasing shop fronts of exceptional quality.
