Description
This is a three-storey bank, built in the Gothic style during the 19th century. It stands on a corner plot, with a single window facing Broad Street and a five-window return range along Berriew Street, including a lower wing.
The Broad Street elevation features a continuous hood mould over the ground-floor openings, creating a series of shallow arches that echo the arched heads above. A doorway with panelled doors and a mullioned overlight is located to the right. Above, a two-pane sash window has a raised brick architrave hood and a continuous strong course. A steeply gabled dormer above incorporates an arched recessed panel containing the Prince of Wales feathers in relief, connected to the gable coping by a buttress. The corner turret corbels out from the ground floor, with a three-light mullioned and transomed window on the first floor and a wood-mullioned window below a polygonal spirelet topped with a finial.
The Berriew Street elevation mirrors the detail of the first two bays, with sill bands and string courses linking the two elevations at the corner turret. A hipped roof dormer is present above. The building steps back to the left, with a chamfered re-entrant angle and a corbelled stack above the ground floor. A narrower bay has a two-light mullioned window recessed within a segmental arch on the ground floor, with two-pane sash windows on each floor above. A steep gabled dormer sits above the upper window.
The rear wing has a shouldered passage entry and a three-light mullioned and transomed window to the right of a blocked, stepped moulded arched doorway. Mullioned and transomed segmentally arched windows are located above. Hipped dormers contain two-pane sash windows, with an oversailing eaves cornice and a stepped sill band that continues with the main range.
Inside, the main banking hall has heavy wood panelled counters and dado panelling, along with a ribbed plaster ceiling supported by heavy beams with brackets springing from corbels.
