Description
Nos 1 and 2 Concrete Cottages are a pair of double-fronted, two-unit cottages built in rendered concrete and topped with a steeply-pitched slate roof. They are two storeys high and feature gabled stair projections and lean-tos at the rear, designed in the Gothick style. Each cottage has a central ridge stack with four diagonally-set shafts and a corbelled cap. The front facade includes angle pilaster strips, a plat band, and moulded architraves. The windows are mullioned and transomed, with the left cottage having a three-light window and the right cottage a four-light window, along with a blind window above the porch. The centrally-placed porches feature a cusped arch on moulded capitals and have a concrete slab floor. The gable ends each contain a single two-light window in the upper storey.
The front door is planked with a fixed light inserted. At the rear, the lean-to and stair projection were enlarged in the late 20th century.
Inside, the porch leads into a small entrance lobby. The two ground floor rooms originally had back-to-back fireplaces, with one concrete overmantle still remaining. The sitting room features a single timber cross-beam with exposed joists. Concrete floor slabs are believed to be intact beneath modern tiles and carpet. The staircase is a concrete dog-leg design. Cast iron T-section rafters support concrete slabs, which are covered with slates. Ledged and battened doors are present throughout the cottages.
