Description
Tyddyn-Cynal is an L-shaped house dated 1826, designed in a simple vernacular Tudor style. It features rubble construction with large irregular quoins and red brick detailing. The roof is covered with large, original slates, has oversailing eaves, and plain squat stacks. The main (east) front includes an advanced gabled wing, with a ground floor 3-light mullioned and transomed wooden window that has small pane glazing. Above, there is a similar cross-window and a 4-pane fixed light in the gable apex. All windows have returned labels in brick and brick voussoirs, with the ground floor window slightly cambered. Between the first floor and upper windows, there is an inset date stone inscribed with the year 1826. The entrance is located on the right return, accessed through a late 19th-century wooden porch with a boarded door. The recessed range to the right of the porch features mullioned windows arranged similarly. At the rear, there is a tall half-outshut with contemporary 12-pane sliding sashes. A later single-storey L-shaped addition to the west side wraps around the north gable, featuring plain-glazed tripartite and cross windows, along with a hipped roof and a modern porch beyond.
The interior was not accessible during the survey in September 1995. This house is an earlier 19th-century example of vernacular Tudor style, retaining good external character. It also has group value with the former house-and-byre complex at Tyddyn-Cynal.
