Description

The barn at Cymryd is a mid-19th century hay barn that features a flush and continuously-roofed byre and loft addition to the northwest, along with a later single-storey cart or garage extension to the southeast. The exterior is constructed of snecked rubble on the yard-facing side and random rubble on the gables and field-facing side, with rough-dressed quoins and dressings around the openings, topped with a slate roof.

The primary block has a large central entrance on the yard side, which is highlighted by a timber lintel and contemporary boarded doors. There is a smaller entrance at the rear, also with a similar door and a cambered head. On either side of the main entrance, there are six tall ventilation slits arranged in two tiers, with two additional slits above the door. The rear side has nine similar slits, along with a latticed opening to the right, indicating a former adjoining range at right angles, as evidenced by the creasing on the upper barn wall. The byre addition has smaller opposing entrances, with two square latticed openings on the right, one on each of the two floors. There is external stone stepped access to a boarded upper loading bay at the southeast gable, and the later extension features twin garage openings to the northwest.

The interiors are plain, showcasing bolted king-post trusses. This barn is included for its group value with other listed items at Cymryd.
