Description

The Former House and Byre Range at Tyddyn-Cynal is a single-storey vernacular sub-Medieval building, likely dating from the late 16th century, though it may have earlier origins. There is a 17th-century domestic addition to the west. The structure is built of whitened rubble, partly on boulder foundations, and is situated on a gentle slope. It has a corrugated asbestos roof with a small 19th-century chimney at the eastern end.

There are two entrances featuring timber lintels and boarded doors; the western entrance is slightly higher and is flanked by small windows, with a 4-pane window on the left and a 2-part leaded window on the right. Access to the upper eastern gable is provided by a cyclopean external stone step, leading to an old boarded door that has three lozenge-shaped vents. The western addition has a new slate roof and shares a large primary stack with the original range, along with a squat chimney to the west. The central entrance of the addition has a modern boarded door, and to the left is a small window with a wooden frame and a thin, diagonally-set mullion.

While the interior was not accessible during the survey in September 1995, it is known to contain two cruck trusses within a former open hall in the primary section. This sub-Medieval house and byre complex retains a particularly good external character and has group value with Tyddyn-Cynal.
