Description
This is a late 18th-century ice house built to serve Benarth Hall. The hall was likely constructed around 1790 for Samuel Price of Lincoln’s Inn. It was sold in 1805, together with a 135-acre estate and farm, and described as an "elegant, commodious and modern built mansion house." The sale particulars highlighted the extensive gardens, including a hot house, green house, pinery, melon pit, peachery and ice house. The ice house itself is a red brick structure with a domed, elongated, egg-shaped form, built predominantly underground. It has a barrel-vaulted entrance of brick and rubble and includes a short entrance tunnel, which is partially collapsed. The ice house survives in good condition.
