Description

The Tubular Railway Bridge is a Grade I listed structure featuring ashlar rectangular castellated towers that were originally designed to support the chains of a suspension bridge. It includes blind arrow loops and an embattled parapet supported by corbelled machicolations. The lower round turrets at the outer corners are adorned with a Lombard frieze along the parapet, while smaller corbelled round turrets at the inner corners also feature a Lombard frieze leading to conical caps. The outer sides of the bridge display a pair of round-headed arches with a continuous chamfer, and the inner sides have vents fitted with latticework iron grilles positioned above the girders.

The bridge has a double-track deck, with each track supported by its own tubular girder construction, and it includes a travelling crane. At each end, there are two round concrete-filled cast-iron piers that were added in 1899. The approach on the east side features a rock-faced coped wall leading to a polygonal terminal pier, while the northeast side has a later, simpler wall.
