Description

Abbey Cottage is an L-shaped, two-storey house built from whitened rubble and topped with a slate roof. The main rectangular section of the building dates back to the early Tudor period, although it has undergone significant modernization. On the north side, now part of a large catslide extension, there is a primary Tudor-arched entrance featuring moulded, weathered jambs made of soft sandstone and a segmental inner arch. On the south side, there is a round-arched entrance with a dressed compound lintel, which is almost cyclopean, and chamfered jambs. Originally, the range extended to the left of this entrance, but it now ends roughly at this point. At the termination, the right-hand jamb of a former entrance can be seen, along with the chamfered reveal of a former window above it. Recent excavation in November 1999 revealed a cobbled pavement, suggesting that there may have been a covered passage or slype in this area. Above the intact entrance, there is a surviving contemporary window, which is a small rectangular light with chamfered jambs. To the right, there is another surviving window with altered jambs, and a similar ground-floor window with chamfered jambs to the right of centre. All other external openings date from the mid-20th century and feature plain glazing.

Inside, the two eastern bays of the roof contain pegged oak trusses, which date from the late 16th or 17th century, although the raking struts are missing. Only the fire-damaged principals and purlins remain, with the former featuring pre-19th century brick infill. The other roof trusses are post-fire replacements of the bolted king-post type.
