Description

The stables, cart shelter, and cowhouse range at Ty-hen is a U-shaped group of farm buildings arranged around a farmyard. The short east range contains stables, while the long south range features a cart shelter at its eastern end and cowhouses to the west. A rubblestone wall runs roughly north-south, separating the cart shelter and stables from the rest of the buildings. The walls are made of irregularly coursed rubblestone, and the roofs are slate, although much of the south range has been covered with tin sheeting.

The east range includes stable doors and windows, while the cart shelter has three elliptical-arched openings with red brick arches. The cowhouses in the south range and extending into the west range have stable doors and vertically louvered windows under large slate-stone lintels. There are also two cart entrances with large slate-stone lintels, one of which has a small eaves window above it at the north end of the west range. The gable end of this range features steep stone steps with a retaining wall leading to a recessed boarded door, which is flanked by multi-paned horizontal sliding sashes that light the hay-loft. A similar eaves window is located on the back wall. The south gable end, which overlooks a field, has a boarded door set well above ground level with a ventilation slit to the right. Additional ventilation slits and original windows can be found on the south wall of the south range, which also has a stable door accessed by external steps from the field.

The interior was not accessible at the time of the survey.
