Description
Madryn Farm features a stable range built in the 19th century, designed as part of a model farm complex. This long cowhouse and stable range is located on the east side and is divided by a gatehouse in the Tudor Gothic style. To the south, there is a large yard for cows, bordered by a mock crenellated wall. North of the yard are two substantial parallel ranges: the southern range contains a cart shelter, a barn with a granary above, and a smithy, while the northern range houses the main stabling. These are connected by a range on the west side.
The buildings are constructed from a mixture of uncoursed and roughly coursed rubblestone, with the gatehouse featuring regularly coursed and dressed rubblestone blocks. The roofs are slate, either gable ended or in a lean-to form, except for the north end of the connecting range on the west, which is half-hipped. Originally, the complex was protected by a screen wall to the north, but most of this has been demolished, leaving only a short section of crenellated wall in the north-east corner and the wall still standing on the south side of the yard.
The stable range includes a hayloft and accommodation for grooms above. The north side has a regular arrangement of four boarded doors flanked by tall ventilator windows on the ground floor. There are five metal eaves windows, four to the left and one on the right of a gabled hoist entry with a boarded door. A continuous catslide lean-to on the south side features wide full-height openings to the left and right, along with boarded doors. A brick stack is present in the roofslope. The east gable end has boarded doors on both floors, with the upper door accessed by an iron staircase featuring slate treads and risers supported by a circular column. A small ventilated opening is located at the apex, with a corresponding opening on the west gable end. Pigsties that once abutted this wall have been removed.
The interior retains partitions, hay racks, and a slate floor, with A-frame roof trusses supporting the loft.
