Description

The building known as the Gatehouse/Barn at Pen-y-bryn is a Grade II* listed structure that serves as a barn and cowhouse, retaining significant elements that may date back to a late medieval gatehouse. It is a long rectangular building with two storeys, oriented roughly north-south, and features a lower cowhouse range attached to the south gable end. The exterior is constructed from very irregularly coursed rubblestone with buttered pointing and includes a massive rubblestone masonry platform on the west side. The roofs are covered with slate and have brick coping and ridge ventilators.

On the east side of the barn, there is a tier of narrow gritstone ventilators located below the eaves, with four in the left bay, two in the centre, and four in the right. There is another group of four ventilators in the right bay on the ground floor and a single ventilator on the left, although some may have been obscured by an inserted doorway. The wide central entrance features voussoirs to a segmental arch with an irregularly shaped timber lintel inserted below it. The barn also has three late 20th-century rooflights and a steeply pitched lean-to on the north gable end.

The cowhouse, which follows the slope of the ground to the south, has stable doors on both the left and right, with the right door featuring a ventilator window. There is also a further ventilator window in the south gable end.

At the time of the survey, only a cursory inspection was possible. The wooden floor structure of the barn's first floor is being entirely replaced with new oak, while the building retains a three-bay queen-post roof dating from around 1700.
