Description
Madryn Farm features a group of model farm buildings that include a long cowhouse and stable range on the east, divided by a gatehouse in the Tudor Gothic style. To the south, there is a large yard for cows, bordered by a mock crenellated wall. North of the yard are two substantial parallel ranges: the southern range contains a cart shelter, barn with a granary above, and a smithy, while the northern range houses the main stabling. These ranges are connected by a structure on the west. The buildings are constructed from a mixture of uncoursed and roughly coursed rubblestone, with the gatehouse featuring regularly coursed and dressed rubblestone blocks. The roofs are slate, either gable-ended or lean-to, except for the north end of the connecting range on the west, which is half-hipped. Originally, the complex was protected by a screen wall to the north, but most of this has been demolished, leaving only a short section of crenellated wall in the north-east corner and the wall still standing on the south side of the yard.
The barn, cart shelter, and smithy range, which includes the granary above, has six square openings at the eaves, four of which have ventilated louvres for the grain store on this floor. Below, there are five wide segmental-headed openings with voussoirs, with the two openings on the right being paired and larger. The second opening from the left is partly blocked and has a doorway infill, with an iron wheel for driving gear above it. There are also two segmental-headed windows to the left of the left opening, and a wide segmental-headed opening in the west gable end, along with a lean-to on the north side. The smithy can also be accessed from the north side towards the east end.
Inside the granary above the barn, there are king-post roof trusses. The smithy is particularly well-preserved, featuring a large brick-built furnace and wooden work benches fixed to the walls.
