Description

Tryfan Mawr is a building that includes a 17th-century section and an early 19th-century house, featuring roughly coursed rubblestone on the older part and rendered rubblestone on the newer section, both topped with slate roofs. The earlier two-storey, two-unit house has a two-light mullion window, but few other original features are visible from the outside. It has a slate-capped integral end stack on the west gable end, with a 16-paned window to the left on the first floor. The early 19th-century house has a symmetrical west elevation with three bays, featuring 16-paned sash windows throughout. The ground floor windows are set beneath a slate-slab roofed verandah supported by four cast-iron columns with moulded plinths and capitals, and there are glazed panels above the windows. The central entrance has a boarded door, which replaced a flush six-panel door, set in a simple Doric surround. The house also includes integral end stacks and three rooflights on the front slope.

Inside, a central hallway curves towards the entrance and features a geometrical staircase with stick balusters and a moulded handrail. The principal rooms have panelled window jambs and plain plaster cornices. There is altered fenestration at the rear, and a single-storey addition on the north gable end includes a 20th-century sash window on the front.
