Description

Tan-y-ffynnon is a cottage dating from the 19th century. It has a single-storey, two-room layout with a full-length catslide outshut at the rear and a loft on the right side. There is a lower wash house that is contemporary to the cottage, set back and attached to the left gable end, along with two small lean-tos attached to the outshut. The exterior is constructed of rubblestone, which is roughly dressed and coursed at the front, pebbledashed on the right gable end, and features buttered pointing on the left gable end, rear, and wash house; the lean-tos are partly made of brick.

The symmetrical front of the cottage includes four-paned sash windows with large stone lintels on either side of a central boarded door, which is sheltered by an open gabled timber porch that is accessed by a short flight of steps. There are rendered integral end stacks with chimney pots. The right gable end has a small window to the right of the stack that provides light to the loft. At the rear, there are small four-paned sashes to the right of the two projecting lean-tos, with the left serving as a coal house and the right as a porch, each having a boarded door on the right return; the porch door includes a glazed panel. The wash house features a small four-paned sash window at the front and an integral red brick end stack on the left, with a boarded door at the rear where it meets the cottage.

The main cottage was not accessible during the survey, but the wash house has a pavior floor, a stove, and a wash stand.
