Description

The Grand Lodge and forecourt walling is a two-storey entrance lodge built in the neo-Norman style, inspired by Penrhyn Castle. It has a rectangular plan featuring corbelled and battlemented circular corner turrets and a central arched carriage entrance. The structure is made of Anglesey limestone ashlar, with a roof concealed behind a parapet. Below the string course, there is a frieze of interlacing round-headed ornament or blind arcading, and the elevations are identical on each side.

The central archway, which features a coat-of-arms above, consists of two stepped orders with full-height columns and a hoodmould. Heavy grilled double gates, including a grille in the tympanum, are located on the entrance side. The soffit of the archway has a plain rib vault with a carved boss at the center, and the corner columns display chevron moulding at the impost level. Entrances to the domestic accommodation are located in the side walls flanking the driveway; these are round-headed with simple moulding and recessed ribbed plank doors. Lanterns are positioned over the archway on the entrance side and above the left doorway under the arch.

For a short distance on either side of the lodge, the park wall is constructed of dressed limestone ashlar, which is taller and features dressed stone coping. This includes a section on the east that returns to the south before changing to a rougher style. Additionally, there are ashlar dwarf walls around areas of lawn that form forecourts funneling the driveway; these walls were originally topped by railings, and the fixings for these can still be seen. The interior was not accessible at the time of the survey.
