Description
Cemetery Lodge, along with its gate piers, gates, and flanking wall, was built around 1860-70. The structure is made of coursed and squared rubble with a Welsh slate roof. The lodge is designed in a simple Gothic style and is two stories tall, forming an L-shape. It features an entrance located in a lean-to porch at the angle of the building, which has a diagonal planked doorway. To the right of the entrance and in the advanced gable to the left, the windows have been renewed in their original openings, showcasing shallow arched heads. A squared bay window with a raking stone roof cuts diagonally across the angle of the gable to the left. Each gable is adorned with corbelling and decorative wood bracing, and there is a dormer window to the right of the entrance. The roof overhangs and includes axial and end wall stacks.
As for the subsidiary features, the wall and gate piers adjacent to the lodge are also constructed from coursed and squared rubble, with ashlar dressings and cast-iron gates. The main gates are flanked by octagonal piers topped with traceried pyramidal copings, and there are pedestrian gates with similar features. The terminal piers of the flanking quadrant wall match this design, and the railings exhibit ornate cast-iron tracery work.
