Description
West Park Museum is a museum built between 1897 and 1898. It is constructed of brick with terracotta dressings and has a Welsh slate roof. The building is single-storeyed and consists of a single room, featuring an entrance in a pedimented Dutch gabled end wall. The exterior includes decorative terracotta panels and a frieze, while the return walls are divided into shallow panels above a plinth and are otherwise blind. A cast-iron and glass verandah runs along the length of the building on the right-hand return, facing the park. The museum is illuminated by a clerestorey in the roof. Inside, the walls of the single exhibition hall are enhanced by a reconstruction of the frieze from the Parthenon. The museum was built for the town and was endowed by Miss Marianne Brocklehurst, a local benefactor.
