Description
The Cemetery Chapel (Episcopal) in Macclesfield was built in 1866 by S Stevens. It is constructed from coursed and squared red sandstone, featuring a Westmorland slate roof and ashlar dressings, showcasing a robust Gothic style. The chapel has a nave with gabled porches on either side, an octagonal narthex to the north, and a tower with a porch to the south. Each porch has a steep pointed arched doorway with ornate ironwork hinges on the doors. The gable apexes are adorned with rose windows, and there are two 2-light Decorated windows to the south of the porches, separated by buttresses. The south gabled porch has a stepped coped gable above steeply-pointed arched doors on each face. The tower, located beyond the porch, features a wide base that is chamfered above to a stepped upper stage, with clasping buttresses on the lower stage that terminate in gablets. The thin recessed spire has two tiers of lucarnes. The half-octagonal narthex to the north also includes rose windows in each of its three gables.
