Description
The Roman Catholic Church of Our Lady and St Ninian, located on Windsor Road in Newton Stewart, was built in 1876. This Gothic-style chapel features a rectangular, aisleless nave with four bays and has projecting gables for the vestry and porch on the south side. The exterior is constructed from snecked rubble with polished red sandstone margins and angles, while the northern gable, which is the liturgical east side, has a painted rubble finish. The nave windows are simple pointed-arch bipartites, and the buttressed west gable includes five lancet windows topped by a rose window with quatrefoil motifs. The northern gable features a high-set cinquefoil window that depicts the Assumption.
The west entrance has a timber and glazed gabled porch with double-leaf timber boarded doors that are fitted with heavy hinges. Above the porch is a wallhead gablet-belfry that houses a bipartite bell-frame.
Inside, the church has a plain interior with simply plastered walls. A stained glass cinquefoil window is positioned above a carved reredos supported by marble-shafted colonnettes. The roof is constructed with scissor trusses.
The church is topped with a slate roof that has a red clay ridge. At the rear, there is a churchyard enclosed by rubble walls, which contains several gravestones from the 19th century.
