Description

The Chapel of St Mary is a mission chapel built in 1874. It features squared rubble construction with crested ridge tiles on a slate roof and coped gable ends, designed in the Gothic style. The building has a continuous nave and chancel, with two parallel right-angled projections forming a north transept that includes an attached vestry.

On the south side, there are three windows with pointed arched openings and hood moulds. The left side has a single lancet window, while the right side has two double lancets, the central one adorned with foiled plate tracery. There are two short buttresses flanking a pointed arched doorway on the left, which has a chamfered surround and a door fitted with cover strips and ornate strap hinges.

The east end features a window with three stepped lancets in a pointed arched opening, while the west end has a two-light window with quatrefoiled plate tracery set in a chamfered pointed arch. Inside, there is a two-bay arcade with four-centred arches supported by a central pier with a hipped and carved capital. The nave has arch braced roof trusses, and the division between the nave and chancel is supported by engaged columns with hipped capitals. The interior walls are plastered.

At the left gable end, there is a bellcote with gabled coping and a pointed arched opening that houses a bell, along with a cross on the gablet at the right gable end.
