Description
The Kittiwell Hotel is a farmhouse, dating back to the early 16th century, with possible earlier features. It has been extended to the rear in the 20th century and is constructed of whitewashed rendered stone rubble, with some cob. The roof is thatched, with rubble stacks at each gable end of the main range, incorporating slate weatherings. There’s a further stack on the rear. The original 3-cell plan is concealed by altered interior partitions. The building originally had two porchways, one now blocked. A lath and plaster partition in the roofspace suggests a later conversion into two dwellings. A significant extension at the lower end incorporates two former outbuildings, likely stables and a granary, now part of the dwelling. A large, right-angled extension was added to the rear in the 20th century.
The main range is two storeys high, with a nine-window range of mainly 19th-century casement windows; the fenestration is scattered. A gabled porch with a slate roof is at the lower end, and a lean-to thatched roof replaces a former porch, now with two casements at the upper end. The lower end extension has a five-window range of 19th-century windows above three plank doors. Inside, the hall and lower end feature stopped and chamfered beams and lintels to gable end fireplaces. Seven roof trusses contain straight principals; two at the upper end have two tiers of threaded purlins, while the others are more roughly hewn. The two lower-end trusses have a lower ridge height, likely replacing earlier trusses, some of which retain smoke-blackened rafters.
