Description
The Roman Catholic Presbytery on Windsor Road in Newton Stewart is a mid-19th century building that features two storeys and a basement, with a three-bay façade and a long single-storey addition at the rear that once served as a school hall. The exterior is constructed of rubble walling, complemented by squared granite quoins and painted raised margins. Access to the central doorway is via stone steps with a simple iron balustrade; the door itself has a glazed oval panel and a fanlight above. Flanking the doorway are single windows, which are sash and case style with 12-pane glazing. The first floor has three windows, each with a casement lower part and small-pane top hopper uppers. The building has an eaves cornice and end skews, with corniced end stacks that feature octagonal cans. The rear elevation includes a long, tall single-storey wing that was formerly used as a school. On the east elevation, there are four single light windows with red sandstone margins, while the west elevation is harled and has large 20th-century tripartite windows. Adjacent to the northeast is a small churchyard containing gravestones from the mid-19th century, enclosed by a stepped rubble wall with saddleback ashlar sandstone coping, ashlar gatepiers, and decorative hoop railings and gates.
