Gatepiers To Sewage Works, Bothwell Road

The gatepiers to the sewage works on Bothwell Road date from the earlier 19th century and consist of two sets of rusticated and tooled pink sandstone ashlar gatepiers, along with linking quadrant walls. These structures were originally part of the entrance to the Hamilton Palace estate and feature motifs from the Hamilton coat of arms, situated on ground that slopes down to the north.

The main central piers have a Greek-cross plan and include a base course, a string course, and a frieze adorned with triglyphs at the corners. The metopes display Hamilton family motifs, including a five-pointed star, a fleur-de-lys, and a rose. The overhanging cornice is decorated with modillions and features two lion masks on each side, leading up to scrolled panels on the truncated pyramidal cap.

The outer piers are slimmer and have a square plan, but they share the same decorative elements as the central piers. The quadrant walls are made from stugged pink sandstone ashlar and have a cavetto moulding below the square coping.
