Description
This is a substantially unaltered, later 19th-century house of asymmetrical design, with subsequent alterations. It is a two-storey, four-bay Free Style house featuring a full-height canted bay that wraps around the southern corner, topped with a parapet and a square-plan attic addition with an ogee domed roof. The house has been subdivided.
The exterior is built of stugged red ashlar sandstone, with snecked and stugged sandstone to the rear and sides. The windows have droved sandstone surrounds. Features include a base course, eaves course, and a blocking course to the canted bay on the left side. A corbel course sits between the ground and first floors, and there are decorative cornices, with a pediment above the centre of the full-height canted bay. A cornice with a double baluster parapet spans the two bays to the right, and exposed rafters are a prominent feature. The window reveals are chamfered and moulded, and long and short quoins are used for detailing.
The principal (southwest facing) elevation has bays grouped in pairs, separated by an extended buttress in the centre, with the two bays to the right being slightly advanced. A moulded door surround with a narrow window on the right side at ground level leads to a modern, two-leaf, timber panelled door with a three-light fanlight above. A window is located on the first floor above the door. A four-light canted bay sits at ground level on the left side, complemented by a bipartite window on the first floor and a Tudor-style timbered pediment above. The advanced two-bay group to the right features a narrow strip window on the first floor, set within a full-height recessed arch in the right bay. A full-height, four-light canted bay is positioned on the outer right.
The southeast facing side elevation has two bays, with a canted bay to the southern corner (left) and a single bay set back to the right. The northwest facing side elevation features a two-bay arrangement with a low, blank addition to the outer left, and a tall window in the central bay. The northeast facing rear elevation has an irregular window pattern, with a three-light stair window at the centre.
The majority of the windows are modern uPVC casements, although some timber sash and case windows remain at the rear. The roof is covered in grey slate, with leadwork on the attic tower. Tall ashlar coped wallhead stacks are present on the northwest and southeast sides, with others to the rear. Cast-iron rainwater goods are fitted, with some replacements in plastic.
The interior was not inspected in 1997.
Surrounding the property are square-plan ashlar sandstone piers with square panels below a cornice and truncated convex pyramidal caps. Sandstone rubble walls with a curved ashlar cope enclose the site, alongside wrought-iron gates.
