Description

Hollybank is a late 19th-century house with subsequent alterations and additions. It is an asymmetrical, rectangular building with a gabled design, initially comprising four bays and two storeys. A billiard room was added to the outer left, and various other additions extend to the rear. The exterior is constructed of stugged and snecked cream sandstone ashlar, with painted, polished ashlar dressings. A base course is present, and the roof is tiled, with a section spanning the doorway and canted bays. The windows feature aproned cills, painted margins, and stone mullions. To the southwest of the main house are a later pitched garage and a timber greenhouse.

The north-facing principal elevation includes steps leading to a painted, chamfered doorway in the centre bay. The door is timber-panelled with a small-pane fanlight above, and a part-glazed vestibule door is situated behind. A three-light canted bay is located at ground level to the left, and a point-arched three-light window is set into the gable at the first floor above. The billiard room addition features a piend-roofed four-light window that breaks the eaves. Another three-light canted bay is positioned to the right of the centre, with a single window in a pitched gablet above.

The south-facing rear elevation is irregularly fenestrated and harled, with a lantern-roofed timber conservatory to the right and a lean-to addition to the left. Wallhead stacks rise above. The east-facing side elevation has three bays, with a single-storey, two-bay billiard room addition to the right, featuring a bipartite window in each bay. A full-height, two-storey, four-light canted bay is on the left. The west-facing side elevation reveals a gabled wall with a bipartite window to the right at ground level, and a single window above. A multi-flue gablehead stack is also present.

The windows incorporate a variety of glazing patterns, including two-pane timber sash and case windows, fixed windows with small-pane upper sections, and replacement uPVC windows to the rear. The roof is covered in grey slate with red clay ridges. Ashlar coped stacks, some of which have been replaced on the west gablehead, and cast-iron rainwater goods (with some uPVC replacements) are also present.

Internally, the ground floor retains timber skirting boards. The drawing room features an egg and dart cornice and a fluted, corniced fire surround. The dining room has a tall, carved timber fire surround with bead and reel mouldings, a bracketed mantle shelf, and a foliate cornice. A timber-panelled hall seat is also present. The billiard room showcases exposed beams with bracketed terminals and an arched recess to the south end with a painted plaster rocaille frieze. An upstairs hall features a tall fire surround with bead and reel moulding, a plain mantle shelf, and a panelled, corniced upper section.

The gatepiers and boundary walls are constructed of chamfered, square-plan pink sandstone ashlar, with a gablet to each side. Low, stugged sandstone walls are topped with ridged ashlar cope.
