Description

The Cricklewood, located at 27 Hamilton Road in Bothwell, is a mid-19th century public house that has undergone later alterations and additions. It is a two-storey building with a symmetrical three-bay rectangular plan, featuring a single-storey piend-roofed addition on the right and a modern pitched conservatory at right angles to the outer right. The exterior is finished in painted, droved sandstone ashlar with painted dressings, and includes an eaves course, moulded architraves, raised cills to the windows, a cornice above a later flat-roofed entrance porch, and long and short quoins.

On the north (principal) elevation, there is a rectangular-plan porch with narrow lights on the left and right returns at ground level in the central bay. This porch features modern part-glazed double doors with part-glazed vestibule doors behind, and a window above on the first floor. Each flanking bay has a window on both floors, and the addition also has a window on each floor.

The south (rear) elevation is irregular with four bays, including a two-storey, three-bay addition in the centre and a single-storey flat-roofed addition on the outer left, which has an attic above the original block. There is a modern door at ground level in the central bay and a small window above on the first floor. A stair window is located in the bay to the right, while the left bay has a blocked window at ground level and a window above on the first floor. The original bay set back to the outer right has a window on each floor, and there is a modern door, set to the left, leading to the left return of the addition.

The east (side) elevation features a high-set window to the left of centre, while the rest of the gabled bay is blank, topped with a gablehead multi-flue stack.

The building showcases a variety of glazing patterns, mostly replacements, including four- and eight-pane timber sash and case windows, with stained glass margins on the stair window. The roof is covered with grey slate, with slate on the addition and a modern felt covering on the flat-roofed addition. The gables have painted droved ashlar coped stacks, ashlar coped skews, and cast-iron rainwater goods, some of which have uPVC replacements at the rear.

Inside, the property has seen significant refurbishment, featuring modern cornices, a timber and leaded stained glass partition at the rear, and carved consoles above a later timber bar.

The boundary walls consist of low sandstone rubble with a ridged ashlar coping, although the railings are missing.
