Description

This is an Italianate villa, dating to around 1880, with later alterations and additions. It is a symmetrical, two-storey building of square plan, originally with three bays, and incorporates a porte-corchere and a single-storey block to the rear, with a lower-pitched projection at the southwest angle.

The villa is constructed of tooled pink sandstone, with polished ashlar dressings. Decorative cast-iron balustrades, later strengthened with steel, are present to the porte-corchere and to flanking canted bays. Architectural details include a base course, an ovolo string course and cornice to the bays at ground level and to the porte-corchere, an eaves course with a string course to the lower margin, and consoled cornices. Carved foliate capitals adorn the columnar mullioned and moulded windows, the cluster column supports of the porte-corchere, and the angles of the strip quoins.

The north (principal) elevation features a rectangular-plan porte-corchere in the central bay at ground level. This is supported by cluster columns on square plinths, with a keystoned three-centred arch to the front, flattened three-centred arches to the sides, and round-headed arches flanking the door. A raised Serlian doorway, with columns flanking each light, gives access to a two-leaf timber panelled door with a fanlight above. Narrow, round-arched lights flank the doorway, and a similar Serlian window is positioned above it at the first floor level. Blank circular plaques are placed above each flanking light. Four-light round-arched canted windows are located at ground level, with bipartite windows above in each flanking bay.

The south (rear) elevation consists of a three-bay wing with a lower single bay projection to the outer left. It features irregularly disposed replacement windows in each bay, and a two-bay right return with irregularly disposed replacement window in each bay. A Serlian stair window is present in the main block, and paired dormer windows are positioned above. A wallhead stack sits between the centre and outer bays.

The east and west side elevations each feature a window at ground level in the central bay, a window at the first floor above, and a wallhead stack between the centre and outer bays. The west elevation also includes a dormer window above, and a replacement door with a fanlight (originally a window opening) at ground level in the bay to the left.

The interior was not inspected in 1997.

The property is enclosed by low, stugged sandstone walls with curved ashlar copes. Greek cross-plan gatepiers, with chamfered angles, recessed, shouldered panels, a string course, a cornice, and a square cap, are topped with replacement wrought-iron gates.

The windows are a mix of two-pane timber sash and case windows and predominantly replacement uPVC windows, with fixed leaded windows in the upper sashes of the canted bays. Some stained glass is present. The roof is covered in grey slate, with grey slate also used on the rear wing and pitched addition. Curved leaded roofs cover the dormers. Ashlar coped stacks and cast-iron rainwater goods (with some uPVC replacements) complete the exterior.
